Le clos des Zouaves
In
June 2001, the BIERCEE DISTILLERY planted 1000 vine stocks
in the hanging gardens of Thuin.
The Regent red cultivar, which is resistant to the usual
vine diseases, is adapted to Northern climatic conditions
and lends itself to reasoned cultivation.
This philosophy guarantees running the vineyard in perfect
harmony with nature. White clovers regulate the humidity of
the soil and provide the quantity of nitrogen needed to keep
the vineyard healthy. Rosebushes planted on the top row prevent
plant louse attacks. Furthermore, a health pollination of
flowers is encouraged by means of natural pheromones. Finally,
the Bordeaux mixture, used by major organic wine producers
is spread to protect the vineyard from mildew and oidium.
The Regent, a crossing of the Riesling and white Sylvaner
varieties with red Chambourcin, is subjected to a meticulous
wine making process in oak casks to produce a vivid red coloured,
well balanced, and very fruity wine.
The first grape harvest was in September 2003.
The name CLOS DES ZOUAVES was chosen to pay homage to the
famous Compagnie de Saint Roch de Thuin regiment, whose active
members include the employees of the BIERCEE DISTILLERIE.
Our Clos des Zouaves is on sale at our Ferme de la Cour, under the new Government-certifiedAOC Belgian label of quality ‘Côtes de Sambre et Meuse’.
